Best perfumes for summer
By Monika Bogdanova — Guides editor, Verona Cosmetics
Summer rewrites the rules of perfumery. High temperatures evaporate light top notes in minutes, and heavy oriental sillages turn cloying in close contact. The right summer scent is light, fresh, and cool — citrus, marine accord, green notes, or a delicate floral. Here is our edit of the fragrances that work in a Bulgarian summer, curated from brands available at Verona Cosmetics.

Choose a lighter concentration
In summer, EDT (Eau de Toilette) and Eau de Cologne (EDC) outperform EDP. Heat amplifies fragrances 2–3×: what is an elegant sillage in January becomes overwhelming in July. The exception is Parfum, used very sparingly — a single drop on a pulse point.
Lean into citrus, marine, and green accords
Bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, mint, basil, marine accord, and water lily — these are the notes that stay fresh and cool even at 35°C. They create a sense of cleanliness and cooling. Classic examples: Acqua di Parma Colonia, Dior Eau Sauvage, Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey.
Be careful with sweet and oriental scents
Vanilla, amber, tonka bean, and heavy musks turn gourmand-sweet in heat and can trigger headaches. Save them for cool evenings, air-conditioned restaurants, or autumn. The exception: gourmand fragrances with citrus opening (e.g., Carolina Herrera Good Girl Glorious Gold) can still work in the evening.
Apply to covered skin and pulse points
In summer, apply to wrists, the neck under the ear, and the inner elbow — not on sun-exposed skin. Perfume + UV + sweat can cause clothing stains and skin reactions. Covered skin also develops scent more stably across the day.
Keep a travel decant
Summer means beach, travel, air-conditioned hotel rooms. A small 30 ml bottle or atomizer of your favorite summer scent in your bag lets you refresh after a swim, a shower, or a long drive. EDC and light EDT tolerate repeated application through the day without becoming overwhelming.
Store perfume away from the heat
During Bulgarian summer, the temperature inside a car, on a balcony, or even in a sunlit room can exceed 40°C. At that temperature, essence oxidizes in days rather than months. Keep the bottle in the coolest room of the house (usually a bedroom or closet on a north-facing wall), always in its original box. For a long holiday — decant 5–10 ml into a small bottle and leave the main bottle at home, away from sun and sudden temperature swings.
